Wine Buying Guide
How to Select the Right Bottle of Wine
Choosing the right wine can be a daunting decision, so many regions, styles, brands and producers. The following guide provides a few tips to help narrow down the selection and find the right bottle of wine to suit your taste and occasion.
Red, white, pink or sparkling?
Generally speaking, full bodied red wines are more suited to consumption during the cooler months of the year and tend to go best with hearty, wintery foods with robust flavours. Slow cooked red meats such as osso bucco or lamb shanks, or the perfectly cooked steak match with varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or blends such as Cabernet Merlot. Depending on how they're made, the particular conditions of the wine¡¦s vintage and the age of the vines, these wines also tend to have cellaring potential, so this is a good place to start if you're after something for the cellar.
When it comes to medium bodied reds, Pinot Noir is a superb, layered, complex variety suited to a wide array of dishes, from Peking duck to rare seared tuna; and Sangiovese is an appealing medium bodied alternative. A cool climate Pinot Noir is the ideal wine to impress and seduce, regions such as Tasmania and Central Otago produce wonderful examples of the variety and offer amazing value for money. The Italian grape variety Sangiovese is becoming increasingly popular in Australia, and a well priced Sangiovese is an attractive option for mid week drinking or weekend entertaining. An excellent match for the home-made wood fired pizza or to take to a barbeque.
Aromatic white wines, such as Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are a must for summer drinking and extremely food friendly. Try pairing aromatic whites with spicy Thai dishes or the clean flavours of Japanese cuisine. A chilled Rose is a sassy alternative for picnics and warm summer nights.
Rich, fresh, medium to full bodied whites such as Chardonnay, Verdelho and Viognier are a fine choice for taking to dinner parties or to drink at home with dishes such as a squid ink linguini with prawns, or chicken roasted with lemon, garlic and rosemary. Australian producers offer a wide range of styles of Chardonnay from many different regions. Margaret River is a world renowned region for producing top quality chardonnay and a good place to start if the selection is overwhelming.
A celebration undoubtedly calls for Sparkling Wine or Champagne. Champagne is the perfect way to say congratulations or commemorate a birthday, anniversary or special achievement. It also makes an ideal gift for friends or business colleagues. Cool climate Australian Sparkling Wine producers offer an excellent alternative if your budget doesn't quite stretch to Champagne prices.
In the case of buying wine as a gift for a friend, it pays to find out which style of wine they prefer, or if they have a favourite region and buy something interesting to suit their tastes. For example, if they are a red wine aficionado why not buy something extremely limited and special like the powerful and full bodied Aramis The Governor Syrah from McLaren Vale; or if Chardonnay is their drink of choice spoil them with an elegant, handcrafted Clairault Estate Chardonnay from Margaret River.
Whatever it is you're looking for, TopWines can offer the right wine to suit your budget, taste and occasion. Whether it's a mixed dozen from a Rising Star such as Elephant Hill in Hawkes Bay to explore something new; or a case of a limited release wine such as Sorby Adams The Family Shiraz for the cellar, you'll be sure to find the right wine here.
